Katarina Witt started to ice skate when she was five. It was her chance to demonstrate her skill and was accepted into a Karl-Marx-Stadt special school specifically designed for gifted kids. Here she first saw her teacher Jutta M ller. Witt was able to make her debut year in 1982, when she finished second at the World Championships held in Copenhagen. The elegance and grace of Witt drew the attention of everyone and she has been a dominant figure skater ever since. Olympic success In the Sarajevo Winter Games in 1984, Katarina won the gold medal for women's figure-skating after a fiercely contested contest. A more competitive contest the following year, Witt was awarded the medal. The free skater lost however she was awarded the gold medal for the figure that was compulsory as well as the short program. Witt was the only female ever since Sonja Haenie to win the winner of a second time in figure skating. Hall of Fame Witt was able to return to skating after her success as a movie actor. Witt competed at the Lillehammer Winter Games, 1994. While she did not win a single medal, she enchanted fans despite finishing seventh. Witt was admitted to the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
